July 2024$11.6M

153 wallets drained through approvals they had already given

People had given the LI.FI contract unlimited approval to spend their USDC, USDT and DAI. A flaw in a new contract update let an attacker use those existing approvals to pull the tokens straight out of their wallets.

Unlimited approvals stay active until you revoke them.

About 230 wallets emptied without signing anything new

Wallets that had approved the Socket Gateway contract lost funds after a vulnerable route was added. The attacker used approvals the victims had granted earlier to move their tokens.

An approval you gave months ago can still be used today.

Fake websites that ask you to sign

Wallet drainers on fake sites trick people into signing malicious approvals and permits. In 2024 they drained 332,000 addresses, mostly on Ethereum.

Approvals to malicious spenders can sit in a wallet unnoticed.
